There were some amendments to the Gun Team Section 17.7.    specifically addressing how moving birds are to be managed by the Gun Team.  Quite simply, ONE GUNNER will accompany the handler and judge if a dog takes a moving bird off the course in both Braced and Single Dog series.

There have been views for and against this concept in the past, but it was decided, after much discussion that this break from tradition is reasonable.

It will be interesting to see if these rule changes result in a perceived improvement.

The individual Gunner in this situation is going to have to navigate the handler, judge and dog to cover their bases when a bird is flushed.   With a little forethought and situational awareness this is not that difficult.

Everyone would like to ensure that every bird flushed by the dog during a trial would result in a retrieve. However, we know that is not the reality in trials or during a typical days hunting.  Birds are missed, hens are flushed and safety is always paramount and each of these leads to a dog not having an opportunity to retrieve.

 

In the discussion it was proffered that bird finding is the major talent and trait we are searching for and retrieving is less important.  If we accept this rationale, then the judges being focused on game finding is not going to be hung up on retrieves.
